Rusyn Scholarly Society Established in Hungary
(New Rusyn Times, January/February 2004)

Rusyn activists in Budapest, Hungary have founded a cultural/scholarly society, the Antonij Hodynka National Society of Rusyn Intelligentsia (Vsederžavnoje Obščestvo Rusyns’koi Yntelihencyi Antonija Hodynky). The organization was registered in April 2003. The president is Antonij Ljavynec, Ph.D.

The organization is divided into a number of sections: linguistic, medicine, historical, musicological, religious, fund for preservation of wooden churches in Subcarpathian Rus’, artistic, etc. It also includes a musical ensemble, “Ugoča”, and a women’s club, “Ruskynja”. Among its goals are to strengthen Rusyn identity through culture; to disseminate the writings of its namesake, Antonij Hodynka (b. Ladomyrov, Zemplyn Co., 1865; d. Budapest, 1946), the Rusyn historian, ethnographer and professor who worked in Budapest; organize scholarly seminars, instructional courses, exhibitions and conferences; inform Rusyns about the national-minority policies of the European Union; establish a Rusyn ethnographic museum; and publish almanacs, books, and films.
