Serbia: Deputy asks assembly how many Ruthenians Vojvodina will have in future
(BBC Monitoring, 2 March 2003)

Excerpt from report by Belgrade-based Radio B92 on 2 March

[Announcer] In the past few days, Vojvodina has not only been interesting because of the basic act on the autonomous region and other constitutional issues, but because of the statements made by some politicians, which could be mildly described as inappropriate. High-ranking official of the Vojvodina DSS [Democratic Party of Serbia] Miroljub Ljesnjak has walked up to the assembly rostrum to ask those present how many Ruthenians there will be in Vojvodina in 100 years' time, if there are 13,000 of them today and, as he said, 2,500 fertile women among them. Ljesnjak apologized today to the region's information secretary Rafajlo Ruskovski in writing, adding that he apologized to all those who were offended by his remarks...

DSS official Miroljub Ljesnjak was not the only one to draw attention to himself with his remarks, namely, Vojvodina Assembly Speaker Nenad Canak addressed the crime issue in Novi Sad [capital of Vojvodina] in an original way. Commenting on the recent shooting in the Cepelin bar in Novi Sad, during which two persons were shot, Canak said that the surnames of the persons killed spoke for themselves. The image of Novi Sad and Vojvodina in the past 10 years has in many ways been changed by the arrival of new people, Canak told SRNA agency.
