Bez osnovne škole gotovo 16 posto Vukovaraca
(Glas Slavonije, 26 June 2002)

Summary:
Glas Slavonije reports that the recently released census data for Vukovar show that there are no longer any Jews living there, that nearly 16 percent of the city’s population has not finished even elementary school and that the Vukovar-Srijem Županija has the highest percentage of single mothers.

The census showed 57.46 percent of the town is Croat, while 32.87 is Serbian. However, the paper points out that the local dialect is a mix of Croatian ijekavski and Serbian ekavski, which it calls “probably the most illiterate version of the two languages, Croatian and Serbian, which ‘tears’ the ears.” One of the reasons they suggest is the high percentage of people who do not even have a complete elementary-school education.

Although representatives of 25 national minorities lived in Vukovar before the war, which incidentally began in 1991 in and around Vukovar, today there are no longer any Jews and just one Roma family.

Within Vukovar-Srijem Županija, there are 1,796 Rusyns, and 1479 who declared Rusyn their mother tongue. There are also 476 Ukrainians and 307 who declared Ukrainian their mother tongue.

The most numerous Rusyn communities are in Vukovar (567 people), Bogdanovci (550) and Tompojevci (366) with smaller numbers in Vinkovci (93), Drenovci (69) and elsewhere. Vukovar and Bogdanovci are also home to the largest Ukrainian communities in the Županija, with 242 and 175 people, respectively.
