Ukrainian Ambassador Visits Vrbas
(Rusyn International Media Center, 22 May 2002)

VRBAS, 21.5.02. Ukrainian Ambassador to Yugoslavia Anatolij Sгšta visited Vrbas yesterday. Sгšta was accompanied by Ana Tertična, the embassy’s cultural attaché. The two met with mayor Rafail Ruskovski to discuss the needs of the local Rusyn and Ukrainian communities and ways Ukraine could assist them.

Sгšta and Tertična also met with representatives of KPD Karpati, the Rusyn Cultural-Educational Society and others. Afterwards, they visited the 20 October elementary school, which offers Ukrainian-language classes.

The Ukrainian embassy has been actively looking to discuss opportunities for Vojvodinian-Ukrainian cooperation recently, particularly in the field of national minorities. The ambassador met with leading Vojvodina members of parliament Đorđe Đukić and Nenad Čanak at the end of January.

Earlier this year, the ambassador also met with Fuadom Stanković, Rector of the University of Novi Sad, to discuss the possibility of establishing a Department of Ukrainian Language there. The University of Novi Sad recently signed a cooperation agreement with the University of L’viv.
