RUSYN NEWS ARCHIVE - 2002 НЇЧ НЄ ЗРОБЕНЕ Summary: The central proposal is to create an organizing committee. Its first task would be to organize a referendum or wide public debate to determine whether the general Rusyn public wants a single (Rusyn-Ukrainian) Council, or for two (Rusyn and Ukrainian) Councils. The committee would then organize the elections to the Council, and would be disbanded once the Council was elected. So far, very little has been done towards forming a National Council, which is the general case among all minority groups within Serbia. The tension has already led to one scandal within the Rusyn community. When the Ministry of Minorities put the rules for the elections to National Councils on the internet, several of those promoting the idea of a joint Rusyn-Ukrainian Council began to collect signatures for their candidates. However, they told the public they were gathering signatures for a Rusyn (i.e., not a Rusyn-Ukrainian) National Council. |
