RUSYN NEWS ARCHIVE - 2002 Słowackie korzenie Andy'ego Warhola na wystawie w CSW Summary: “The main figure of the exhibition at Ujazdowski Castle became our compatriot Andrijko Varchola, as his mother called him. Up to now we have not had an opportunity to acknowledge that we are proud of him, we are inspired by him, and we are having as much fun as he did” – said with proud Magda Vášáryová, Slovak ambassador to Poland, while yesterday opening “Slovak Season” [Sezon Słowacki] in Warsaw. It is not the first exhibition of Warhol works in Poland (where his Rusyn background is well known), as his pieces were already included in a an exhibition devoted to Great Masters of the 20th century, that was also held in Warsaw at the renewed Zachęta Gallery. What’s new about this exhibition is that along with Warhol’s works one can also view his and his family’s personal artifacts that were brought over from the museum in Medzilaborce. Since Warhol is presented at this exhibition as the creator of modern icons – his works are displayed alongside 18th century Rusyn icons permanently exhibited at the Museum of Ukrainian-Rus’ Culture in Svidník. The exhibition, entitled: “The Land Not Far Away: Andy Warhol as Andrijko Varchola from Miková ["Kraina nieodległa: Andy Warhol jako Andrijko Varchola z Mikovej"] can be viewed at Center for Modern Art “Ujazdowski Castel” [Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej Zamek Ujazdowski] till November 10. It is accompanied by exhibition of works by three young artists from Slovakia: Marko Blažo, Bohdan Hostiňák and Miloš Kopták that is entitled “Cult of Paradox ["Kult paradoksu"]. |
