ЗАЧУВАЙМЕ НАРОДНИ НАЗВИ ШОРОМ И УЛЇЦОМ
(Ruske Slovo, 9 August 2002)

Summary:
After World War Two, many of the names of streets in Ruski Kerestur were changed, mostly to honor the heroes of the war and major figures in the Yugoslav Communist Party. Now, a commission has been named to recommend new street names, and the writer is calling for a return to the streets’ historical names, many of which honor prominent figures from Rusyn and Ukrainian history.

Among his suggestions include returning names like Kostel'nik, Dukhnovych, Shevchenko and Koriatovych to Ruski Kerestur streets. The small town has nearly 30 streets, all of which could potentially be renamed.

The writer believes that renaming the streets in honor of significant Rusyn and Ukrainian figures is not only a way to honor the groups’ forebears, but also a major step towards protecting the groups’ cultural heritage.
