Absolut Warhola at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival
(Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, 9 April 2002)

Summary:
Among the films shown at this year’s Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto (April 26 to May 5, 2002) there was Absolut Warhola, directed by Stanislaw Mucha and produced in Germany in 2001. From the official Web page of the festival, which is North America's largest documentary festival, comes the following description of the film:

In the remote "Ruthenian Bermuda Triangle" between Slovenia, Poland and Ukraine lies the seemingly unremarkable town of Medzilaborce, home of Europe's only Pop Art Museum. Dedicated to American icon Andy Warhol - known to the locals as Andrijko Warhola -- the museum is situated next door to the tiny village of Miková, hometown of the Warhol family clan. Unbowed by poverty and unemployment, Warhol's aunts and cousins swap stories and schnapps, digging up memories and souvenirs of their famous relation. Although a leaky roof and declining attendance are threatening the museum's collection, the zealousness of its curator remains unaffected, as evidenced by the Andy-themed pop songs that he and his band perform on the museum's steps. With humour and compassion, director Stanislaw Mucha tells the story of a village whose famous son has taken on mythic proportions, kindling the villagers' imaginations and linking their isolated home to a distant world of glamour and prosperity. Winner of the 2001 German Film Critics Prize for Best Documentary and the Planete Audience Prize at the 2001 Leipzig Festival. Karen Tisch. In Ruthenian and Slovakian with English subtitles.
